Driver distraction: A human factors problem at the intersection of transportation and healthcare

Driver distraction is a growing public health problem. In 2017, there were more than 3100 fatalities on US roadways from crashes involving inattentive drivers. Even with the influx of advanced automation in vehicles, distraction continues to pose safety problems and has been a causal factor in many of the recent automated vehicle crashes. While the topic has been extensively studied, few countermeasures have been effective. We discuss driver distraction as it manifests in both legacy and advanced vehicles, and present design-relevant considerations from transportation and healthcare human factors.
